Countries with the Largest National Open Data Portals in 2026
Most governments now run a national open data portal, a single website where ministries, agencies and often cities publish free, reusable data on everything from bus timetables to air quality. Back in 2019, RList counted 88 countries with one, holding close to 1.2 million datasets between them. Here are the 14 biggest in 2026, ranked by the number of datasets each national portal lists. Counts change daily and every portal counts a little differently, so each figure is the one the portal (or its official reporting) published at the time of writing, in 2026. Sources are named below. The EU's data.europa.eu isn't a country portal, so it's left out. So is the UK, because data.gov.uk is being rebuilt as a smaller, curated National Data Library and no longer publishes a comparable total.

The Top 10
#1
United States — 604,910 datasets
Data.gov, run by the General Services Administration, is still the giant of government open data. Its catalog listed 604,910 datasets in September 2026, more than twice the 261,090 RList counted in 2019. Those datasets come from more than 120 federal, state, city, university and tribal publishers, and in 2025 the catalog moved off its old CKAN software onto a new custom-built system. Exact totals vary a little depending on where you look, because some similar datasets are grouped into “collections” that can be counted once or many times.[1][16]
#2
India — 230,000+ datasets
India's Open Government Data Platform gives one point of access to data from the country's ministries, departments and agencies. It held more than 230,000 datasets as of July 2026. Its own counters slice things more finely still: 623,178 individual resources (files and data feeds) grouped into 13,090 catalogs.[2]
#3
Germany — 169,221 datasets
GovData is a metadata portal: it doesn't store the files itself, but pulls together listings from federal, state and municipal open data sites into one search. That design has let it grow fast, from about 96,555 datasets in March 2024 to 169,221 in 2026, including 18,902 of the EU's specially designated “high-value” datasets.[3]
#4
Australia — 141,395 datasets
Data.gov.au listed 141,395 datasets at the end of September 2026, up from 85,234 in RList's 2019 count. Among its recent additions are a national waste and resource recovery database and state rental bond data, the kind of everyday figures that make these portals useful.[4][16]
#5
South Korea — 107,901 datasets
Korea's Public Data Portal started in 2013 with 5,272 datasets. It passed 100,000 at the end of 2024 and topped 107,900 by August 2026, about 20 times where it began. Data comes from around 1,100 institutions, from central ministries to the National Assembly, and public administration, culture and tourism are the biggest topics. Korea doesn't just publish a lot: it has also ranked first in the OECD's OURdata Index of open data policy four times in a row.[5][15]
#6
Spain — ~100,000 datasets
Spain's national catalog, datos.gob.es, reached almost 100,000 datasets in 2025, containing more than half a million individual files. Like GovData, it collects listings from regional and local governments across the country as well as national bodies, which is why its count is rounded here.[6]
#7
France — 74,631 datasets
Data.gouv.fr lists about 74,600 datasets and keeps adding them quickly: 2,265 new ones in July 2026 and 1,678 more in August. France pairs size with quality too, coming second only to Korea in the OECD's 2023 OURdata Index.[7][15]
#8
Italy — 57,437 datasets
Italy's national catalog, dati.gov.it, shares 57,437 datasets with the EU's data.europa.eu portal. The EU's 2025 Open Data Maturity report rated about 60% of their metadata (the descriptions that make data findable) “excellent” and the rest “good”, putting Italy's catalog first among EU member states for metadata quality.[8]
#9
Austria — 55,665 datasets
Data.gv.at lists 55,665 datasets from 1,356 organisations, and 765 apps built on that data. Some reports put its own counter at over 57,600, which would nudge it just past Italy, so these mid-table places are close. Since September 1, 2025, Austria's Freedom of Information Act has required public bodies to actively publish data that isn't specially protected, so the count should keep rising.[9]
#10
Taiwan — 52,437 datasets
Taiwan's Government Data Open Platform lists 52,437 datasets from central and local agencies. It even publishes data about itself: a downloadable list of every dataset on the platform and figures for how often each one is viewed and downloaded.[10]
Data.gov catalog (catalog.data.gov), 604,910 datasets, last updated September 5, 2026. The GSA's data.gov GitHub wiki describes the new catalog that replaced the CKAN-based one in 2025 (120+ publishing organizations) and how “collections” affect counts.
Open Government Data (OGD) Platform India (data.gov.in): 230,000+ datasets as of July 2026, as reported in reference coverage of the platform, plus the platform's own counters (623,178 resources, 13,090 catalogs).
GovData (data.gov.de), the portal's own dataset counter (169,221 datasets, 18,902 high-value datasets), and earlier reporting of 96,555 datasets in March 2024. Also data.europa.eu, “Open Data Portals around Europe: GovData.”

The August 2026 figure of 107,901 comes from Korean government reporting on data.go.kr.

Government Data Open Platform (data.gov.tw), dataset search (52,437 datasets), including its dataset list and view/download statistics datasets.
Open Government Portal (open.canada.ca), Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat: 39,103 datasets out of 47,964 total records, which also include “open information” documents.

Data register of the Dutch Government (data.overheid.nl): 20,611 datasets.
Portal Brasileiro de Dados Abertos (dados.gov.br): 19,552 datasets, 127,835 resources and 309 organisations. Agência Brasil (March 2026) on Brazil ranking 8th in the OECD’s OURdata Index and dataset growth from 10,447 (2022) to more than 15,000 (2025).
OECD, 2023 OURdata Index: Open, Useful and Re-usable data (Korea and France top two, followed by Poland), and the OECD’s 2026 working paper on the Digital Government Index and OURdata Index.
RList Insights, “Global race to innovate: national open data portals” and “2019 report on countries with national open data portals” (2019 counts: United States 261,090, Czech Republic 134,479, Australia 85,234, Canada 83,279; 88 countries, close to 1.2 million datasets). Some portals have since changed how they count, so 2019 and 2026 totals aren’t always directly comparable.
