Read this first: this table ranks sovereign monarchs of recognised states (kings, queens, emperors, a pharaoh, a sultan and a prince) by the length of a reign with reasonably reliable dates, as of 26 October 2026. Lengths are in years, calculated from the dates shown; the reign counts from accession even when the monarch was a child, as for Louis XIV, but a regent who ruled in a minor’s name is never ranked. Legendary rulers with no reliable dates are left out. One monarch is still reigning, Brunei’s Hassanal Bolkiah, so his figure grows each day; Sweden’s Carl XVI Gustaf (53.1 years) is also still reigning but is below this table’s cut-off of 59 years. For current leaders of all kinds see The Longest-Serving Current Leaders in the World. Disputed or excluded claims: Pepi II of Egypt is reputed to have reigned about 90 years, but the figure rests on one ancient king list and is not accepted as verified, so he is not ranked. Sobhuza II of Swaziland reigned 82 years and 254 days (10 December 1899 – 21 August 1982), the longest verified reign in modern times, but he came to the throne as an infant, a regent ruled until 1921 and Swaziland was a British protectorate until 1968, so he is not counted as the sovereign of an independent state throughout; he would rank first on length alone. Maya city-state kings such as K’inich Janaab’ Pakal of Palenque (about 68 years) are also left out, as their dates come from inscriptions. Lengths for medieval and ancient reigns can differ by sources and by how the start and end are dated, and Qianlong is counted to his 1796 abdication although he kept real power until 1799.[1]

The Top 10

#1

Louis XIV, France — 72.3 years

Louis XIV became King of France on 14 May 1643, aged four, and reigned until his death on 1 September 1715: 72 years and 110 days, the longest verified reign of any sovereign monarch. His mother and Cardinal Mazarin governed in his name until he took personal control in 1661, after Mazarin’s death. This ranking counts the whole reign, from accession, because the king was the sovereign throughout. The video is from the Château de Versailles.[1][2]

#2

Elizabeth II, United Kingdom — 70.6 years

Elizabeth II succeeded her father, George VI, on 6 February 1952 and reigned until her death on 8 September 2022, 70 years and 214 days. She passed Victoria’s record as Britain’s longest-reigning monarch on 9 September 2015 and celebrated a Platinum Jubilee in June 2022, the first in British history. The video is NBC News’s report on the jubilee.[1][3]

Franz Joseph I became Emperor of Austria on 2 December 1848, aged 18, after his uncle abdicated during the 1848 revolutions, and reigned until his death on 21 November 1916, 67 years and 355 days, a few days short of 68 years. Ramesses II, Egypt — 66.2 years

Ramesses II ruled New Kingdom Egypt for about 66 years, in the 13th century BC; Egyptologists place his accession around 1279 BC and his death around 1213 BC. This is the oldest reign on the list, and the only one dated by ancient inscriptions rather than by a modern calendar, so its start and end are estimates and its length could be off by a year or two. The video is Reuters’ report on his colossal statue’s move to the Grand Egyptian Museum.[1][7]

Ferdinand III of Sicily, Sicily and the Two Sicilies — 65.2 years

Ferdinand became King of Sicily on 6 October 1759, aged eight, when his father left for the Spanish throne, and reigned until 4 January 1825, 65 years and 90 days.
