Standing on an island in the Narmada River facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam, this is a likeness of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first deputy prime minister and the statesman credited with unifying the country's hundreds of former princely states after independence. Its height, 182 meters, was chosen to match the number of seats in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly.[1]
A gilded bronze depiction of Vairocana Buddha at the Foquan Temple in Henan province, built over more than a decade and completed in 2008. The figure alone is 128 meters tall, sitting atop a lotus throne and a purpose-built hill — before the Statue of Unity opened in 2018, it was widely cited as the world's tallest statue.[2]
A standing Buddha near Monywa, Myanmar, part of the sprawling Maha Bodhi Ta Htaung monastic complex, which also holds a 90-meter reclining Buddha. Built between 1996 and 2008, its hollow interior rises through dozens of floors lined with paintings depicting Buddhist teachings.[3]
Also known as Vishwas Swaroopam, this depiction of Lord Shiva in Nathdwara, Rajasthan opened in October 2022 after roughly a decade of construction, making it the world's tallest statue of Shiva. An observation gallery near the figure's chest looks out over the surrounding Aravalli hills.[4]
A bronze Amitabha Buddha in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture, completed in 1995 on a site associated with Shinran, founder of the Jōdo Shinshū school of Buddhism. An elevator inside carries visitors up to an observation deck set in the figure's chest, roughly 85 meters above the ground.[5]
