Basis and caveats: GitHub star counts as of October 17, 2026, taken from EvanLi's daily Github-Ranking lists, which read GitHub's own figures. Stars are a bookmark anyone with a GitHub account can add, so they measure attention, not how many people actually use a project, and the new viral repos are moving fast (REA gained about 59,000 stars in the three days before this snapshot). Only software counts: apps, agents, frameworks, libraries and model code that you install and run, whose own description presents it as AI software. Left out are agent “skill” packs, CLAUDE.md files and prompt collections (several of which have more stars than anything here, such as obra/superpowers), curated lists, courses and tutorials, and repositories that don't hold the product's own source (anthropics/claude-code mostly holds issues and plugins). Any license counts as long as the code is public, so source-available projects such as n8n are included; the License filter separates “Permissive” (MIT, Apache, BSD), “Copyleft” (GPL, AGPL) and “Restricted” (fair-code or custom terms). Just below the cut is MinerU, a document-to-Markdown converter for AI (81,878). Beware look-alike repositories: a fake copy of REA was found spreading malware.[1][3]

The Top 10

#1

OpenClaw — 392,215 stars

Peter Steinberger, the Austrian developer who founded PSPDFKit, launched the project in November 2025 as Clawdbot. After Anthropic raised trademark concerns it briefly became Moltbot, then settled on OpenClaw. It's an assistant that runs on your own computer and answers in the chat apps you already use (Discord, iMessage, Slack, Teams, Telegram, WhatsApp and 20-plus others), with the AI model behind it swappable as a plugin. It went viral in early 2026 and drew about 2 million visitors in a single week. When Steinberger joined OpenAI that February, the project moved to an independent foundation; the copyright in its MIT license now belongs to the OpenClaw Foundation.[2]

#2

REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) — 293,055

REA plugs into coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Gemini CLI as an MCP server. With it, an agent can work out how an app or website does something without having its source code, from JavaScript and Electron apps to .NET programs and native binaries. The analysis runs on your own machine. Created on April 14, 2026, it reportedly gained nearly 70,000 stars in two days in early October; on October 14 it stood at 234,477, about 59,000 fewer than three days later. Its fame also spawned a fake copy under a look-alike account that shipped a trojan, so the project says to download it only from morluto/rea, rea.tools or the rea-agents npm package.[3]

#3

Hermes Agent — 254,466

Nous Research, best known for its Hermes family of open models, launched Hermes Agent in February 2026. It sells itself as a self-improving agent: it turns what it does into reusable skills, refines them as it goes and remembers across sessions. You can put any model behind it, from Nous Portal and OpenRouter to OpenAI or your own server. It went from zero to about 212,000 stars in five months.[4]

#4

DeepSeek Harness — 251,254

The Chinese lab behind the DeepSeek models released its own agent harness, run as dsh, on August 13, 2026, as an MIT-licensed developer preview. Everything in it is a swappable plugin, including the model connection, the tools and the agent loop itself, built on the Cordis framework. It passed 200,000 stars in just over two weeks. DeepSeek says it can't accept outside code contributions yet and warns that updates will break compatibility.[5]

#5

OpenCode — 214,404

OpenCode is an open-source coding agent for the terminal, also available as a desktop app. It's built by Anomaly, the team behind the SST developer framework, and the repository moved from sst/opencode to anomalyco/opencode. It works with more than 75 AI model providers. The code is MIT-licensed, and Anomaly sells paid add-ons for hosted model access.[6]

#6

n8n — 207,731

n8n began as a workflow-automation tool and now calls itself “the platform for AI agents and workflow automation.” It combines a visual canvas with custom code, more than 1,500 integrations and over 9,000 templates, and runs self-hosted or in n8n's cloud. It's “fair-code” rather than open source in the strict sense: anyone can read the code and self-host it, but its Sustainable Use License limits commercial use, and some enterprise features carry a separate license.[7]

#7

TensorFlow — 201,061

Google open-sourced TensorFlow, the machine-learning framework built by its Google Brain team, in November 2015, and for years it was one of the most-starred projects on all of GitHub. The 2025–26 wave of agent software has pushed it down to seventh. Even so, it is still the most-starred machine-learning framework, ahead of Hugging Face's Transformers (#12) and PyTorch (#28).[8]

#8

Claw Code — 194,930

Claw Code started on March 31, 2026, the day Claude Code's source was reportedly exposed, as a clean-room rewrite of its agent harness: built from scratch to work the same way, without copying the code. Its README claimed it passed 50,000 stars in about two hours. Today it's a Rust implementation of a claw command-line agent. The repository calls itself “closer to a museum exhibit than a product pitch”, maintained by agents, and points anyone who wants to get real work done to sister projects.[9]

#9

Firecrawl — 192,244

Firecrawl turns websites into clean Markdown or structured data that AI models can use. It deals with the hard parts of scraping, such as JavaScript-heavy pages, proxies and rate limits, and connects to agents as an MCP server. The code is under the AGPL-3.0 license, and the company also sells a hosted version.[10]

#10

AutoGPT — 187,616

AutoGPT was the breakout hit of spring 2023: an experimental app that chained GPT-4 calls together so it could chase a goal on its own, and one of the fastest-growing projects GitHub had seen. It has since become a platform for building, deploying and running AI agents, with a visual builder. The original “classic” agent is MIT-licensed; the newer platform uses the Polyform Shield license, which bars using it to build a competing product.[11]
