The Countries with the Most Michelin Three-Star Restaurants
Michelin’s highest rating, three stars, is held by only a few dozen restaurants worldwide, and France and Japan hold more than half of them. Counts below are per the current Michelin Guide selections as of October 4, 2026; every country with at least two three-star restaurants is listed.
Pictured: chef Michaël Arnoult of Les Morainières (Jongieux, Savoie), France’s only new three-star restaurant in the 2026 guide, interviewed after the promotion; France is #1 with 30 three-star restaurants.

As of October 4, 2026. Michelin publishes its guides on a rolling schedule through the year, so counts can change when the next edition lands (Switzerland, for example, is still on its 2025 edition). France is counted without Monaco: the France & Monaco guide lists 31 three-star restaurants, one of which, Le Louis XV, is in Monaco. Hong Kong and Macau are special administrative regions covered by one separate Michelin guide, so they appear as a single labelled row (7 in Hong Kong, 2 in Macau). Mainland China counts the 2026 Beijing and Shanghai selections plus the Chengdu 2027 selection. Countries with a single three-star restaurant (such as South Korea, Sweden, the Netherlands and Monaco) are not listed. Rows 11–17 (Denmark to Thailand) draw on the sources in note 14.[1][14]
The Top 10
#1
France — 30 three-star restaurants
The Michelin Guide France & Monaco 2026 recommends 31 three-star restaurants, one of them Le Louis XV in Monaco, which leaves France with 30.[2] Nine are in Paris, including Arpège, Pierre Gagnaire, Le Cinq, Épicure and Le Pré Catelan, and the only new entry in 2026 is Les Morainières in Jongieux, Savoie.[2][3]
#2
Japan — 21 three-star restaurants
Tokyo has 12 three-star restaurants in the 2026 guide, with Myojaku the one new promotion, Kyoto has six after Miyamaso became its first new three-star in six years, and Osaka has three (Hajime, Taian and Kashiwaya Osaka Senriyama).[4] Tokyo’s list spans Japanese, sushi, French and Chinese kitchens, from Kanda and RyuGin to Quintessence and Sazenka.[4]
#3 (tie)
United States — 16 three-star restaurants
California has 10, New York has five (Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin, Per Se, Jungsik New York and Sushi Sho) and Chicago’s Smyth is the one outside those two states.[5] Californios in San Francisco is the newest, and the first Mexican restaurant in the world to earn three stars.[6]
#3 (tie)
Spain — 16 three-star restaurants
The Michelin Guide Spain & Andorra 2026 lists 16, including Barcelona’s Disfrutar, ABaC, Cocina Hermanos Torres and Lasarte, plus El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, DiverXO in Madrid and Noor in Córdoba.[7] Barcelona alone holds four of them, and the Basque Country adds Arzak, Akelarre, Azurmendi and Martín Berasategui.[7]
#5
Italy — 15 three-star restaurants
All 14 three-star restaurants from the previous year were confirmed in the 2026 guide, and La Rei Natura by Michelangelo Mammoliti in Serralunga d’Alba joined as the 15th.[8] The list runs from Osteria Francescana in Modena and Enoteca Pinchiorri in Florence to La Pergola in Rome and Atelier Moessmer in Brunico.[8]
#6
Germany — 12 three-star restaurants
L.A. Jordan in Deidesheim is the new three-star in the 2026 guide.[9] The dozen is spread across the country: two in Baiersbronn (Schwarzwaldstube and Bareiss), two in Hamburg and two in Munich (JAN and Tohru in der Schreiberei), plus Rutz in Berlin and Aqua in Wolfsburg.[9]
#7
United Kingdom — 10 three-star restaurants
All 10 kept their third star in the Great Britain & Ireland 2026 guide.[10] Six are in London (including CORE by Clare Smyth, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay and The Ledbury); the others are L’Enclume in Cartmel, Moor Hall in Aughton, and The Fat Duck and The Waterside Inn in Bray.[10]
#8
Hong Kong & Macau — 9 three-star restaurants
Michelin covers the two special administrative regions in one guide: Hong Kong holds seven (T’ang Court, Amber, Caprice, Forum, Ta Vie, Sushi Shikon and 8½ Otto e Mezzo – Bombana) and Macau two (Robuchon au Dôme and Jade Dragon).[11] They are shown together here and are not counted in Mainland China.[11]
#9 (tie)
Switzerland — 4 three-star restaurants
The 2025 edition, still current, lists Memories at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl in Basel, Restaurant de l’Hôtel de Ville in Crissier and Schloss Schauenstein in Fürstenau, all retained from the year before.[12] The 2026 edition had not been published as of October 4.[12]
#9 (tie)
Mainland China — 4 three-star restaurants
Beijing’s 2026 guide gives three stars to Chao Shang Chao (Chaoyang) and Xin Rong Ji (Xinyuan South Road), Shanghai’s Taian Table holds the city’s only three stars, and Xin Rong Ji became Chengdu’s first three-star in the 2027 selection.[13] Guangzhou has none, and Shanghai’s Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet closed in November 2025.[13]
