Overview

There are at least 109 mountains on Earth with elevations greater than 7,200 metres (23,622 ft) above sea level. The vast majority of these largest mountains are located on the edge of the Indian and Eurasian continental plates.

Mount Everest ( or otherwise known as Chomolungma or "Goddess Mother of Mountains" to Tibetian natives ) remains the highest mountain at 8,848m. Altogether, there are 14 mountains that exceed 8000m in height - collectively, they are referred to as the "eight-thousanders". All of the eight-thousanders are located in Asia's Himalayas and the Karakoram mountain ranges.
