Perry Memorial Monument.

Located at Put-in-Bay, South Bass Island in Lake Erie, Perry Memorial Monument or Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial served as an un-official lighthouse for boats on Lake Erie. Standing at 352 feet (107 meters), the granite monument was built in 1913 to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the naval victory of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry over the British in the Battle of Lake Erie of the War of 1812.

The Perry Memorial Monument is the second tallest lighthouse in the world and the tallest in North America. Its observation deck is open to visitors with a small admission fee.

Statue Of Liberty.

Of the lighthouses covered in this list, the Statue of Liberty is the most unusual - both in form and purpose. All along, it was more statue and monument and not really a lighthouse, even though there was a series of effort made to improve its lighthouse effectiveness.

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated to the United States by the French government on 28 Oct 1886. Despite efforts by the United States Lighthouse Board to enhance the effectiveness of its torch, the Statue of Liberty remained virtually invisible at night. In 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt ordered the transfer of the statue to the War Department, due to its effectiveness as a lighthouse. Today, it is designated as a national monument under the care of the National Park Service.
