Largest Militaries in Middle East


According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, the total world military expenditure rose to $1 74 billion in 2017. While US military spending in 2017 was the highest at $610 billion, Saudi Arabia was the third largest spender in 2017 following a 9.2 per cent increase in military expenditure to $69.4 billion.

Among the 10 largest spenders, Saudi Arabia had the highest ‘military burden’ - military spending as a share of GDP’ in 2017, at 10 per cent of GDP. Iran, Israel and Syria imposes compulsory military service for their (male) population, which contributes to their high ranks in this metric.
